The Animated Film That Looked Back at Fantasia and Laughed

 

In 1940, Walt Disney released Fantasia, a cathedral-sized attempt to marry classical music with animation and drag cartoons into the marble halls of high culture.

Thirty-six years later, Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto answered with a wrecking ball.

Allegro non troppo begins with a producer boasting that he has invented an immortal new form: animated stories synchronized to classical music. He is then informed that an American named “Prisney” may have already done something similar. Undeterred, he assembles an orchestra of elderly women, an authoritarian conductor and an exhausted animator kept chained in a dungeon.

That opening tells us exactly what kind of film this is.

It admires Fantasia, steals its structure and then attacks nearly everything surrounding it: artistic pretension, commercial exploitation, obedience, masculinity, consumerism and the assumption that technological progress represents moral progress. The live-action passages are filmed like frantic, decaying vaudeville, while the animated sections move from melancholy to erotic absurdity to ecological nightmare.

The film contains six major musical sequences using Debussy, Dvořák, Ravel, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Vivaldi. Its best-known passage, set to Ravel’s Boléro, begins with life emerging from residue inside a discarded soda bottle. Evolution advances with the music until industrial civilization erupts and crushes the natural world that produced it. Bozzetto has called the Boléro section the film’s most spectacular and conceptually interesting episode; he considers the primitive-leader satire set to Dvořák especially relevant to the present.

Other sequences are more intimate. Sibelius’s Valse triste follows a lonely cat wandering through the ruins of the home it remembers. An aging satyr discovers that desire has outlived his ability to inspire it. An industrious bee has its orderly existence repeatedly destroyed by oblivious human lovers.

This is why calling Allegro non troppo merely an “anti-Fantasia” undersells it. Parody is only the doorway. Beyond it sits a sadder argument: civilization congratulates itself while imprisoning artists, exhausting nature and mistaking domination for achievement.

The film became a cult object partly because it existed outside the American animation machine. For many viewers, it traveled through repertory screenings, imported releases, worn videotapes and personal recommendation rather than sustained mainstream distribution. A 2021 scholarly study describes it as both an affectionate response to Fantasia and a significant work of Italian animation and social satire in its own right.

Now the film has returned for its fiftieth anniversary. GKIDS acquired North American rights to Bozzetto’s catalog and premiered a newly restored version at New York’s Metrograph in March 2026, paired—appropriately—with Fantasia. Metrograph identifies its presentation as a new 2K restoration, although Gateway Film Center promoted a later screening as a 4K restoration. Until technical restoration notes clarify the difference, “newly restored” is the safest description.

The restoration matters because cult films are often remembered through compromised copies. Dirt, faded color, weak sound and bad subtitles become part of their mythology. Once restored, the film stops looking like a strange artifact somebody smuggled out of European animation history.

A beautiful, vulgar, bruised and unexpectedly prophetic warning—delivered by cartoons while the orchestra keeps playing.
