MUSE HEARD THE WOW! SIGNAL — AND TURNED IT BACK TOWARD US
Somewhere along the way, the UFO stopped being merely something in the sky. It became a mirror. Muse's new album The Wow! Signal takes its name from one of the great unresolved moments in SETI history: the strange 72-second narrowband radio signal detected by Ohio State University's Big Ear telescope in 1977. Astronomer Jerry Ehman saw the unusual sequence on the computer printout, circled it and wrote the word that followed the mystery for the next half-century: Wow! No alien civilization was ever established as its source. That's precisely what makes it interesting. The signal remained unanswered long enough for culture to answer it instead. Muse released The Wow! Signal on June 26, 2026, building a ten-song record around cosmic mystery, technological anxiety, extraterrestrial communication and that old human suspicion that maybe something else is listening. They even announced the damn thing by sending a tablet roughly 20 miles into the atmosphere....
