MUSE HEARD THE WOW! SIGNAL — AND TURNED IT BACK TOWARD US

Somewhere along the way, the UFO stopped being merely something in the sky.

It became a mirror.

Muse's new album The Wow! Signal takes its name from one of the great unresolved moments in SETI history: the strange 72-second narrowband radio signal detected by Ohio State University's Big Ear telescope in 1977. Astronomer Jerry Ehman saw the unusual sequence on the computer printout, circled it and wrote the word that followed the mystery for the next half-century:

Wow!

No alien civilization was ever established as its source.

That's precisely what makes it interesting.

The signal remained unanswered long enough for culture to answer it instead.

Muse released The Wow! Signal on June 26, 2026, building a ten-song record around cosmic mystery, technological anxiety, extraterrestrial communication and that old human suspicion that maybe something else is listening.

They even announced the damn thing by sending a tablet roughly 20 miles into the atmosphere.

Subtlety was apparently unavailable.

Muse also brings back a very specific memory for me.

I was once a co-host on the podcast Shift Happens, whose host, GG, loved Muse—and other bands that seemed naturally at home playing out around Joshua Tree and the California desert. There is something about that landscape and this kind of music that belongs together: enormous sky, black mountains, weird radio signals, military airspace, UFO mythology and enough silence between civilization and the stars to let your imagination misbehave.

And Muse has always understood scale.

They don't make music that politely knocks.

They make music that sounds like the transmission has already begun.

That's why The Wow! Signal belongs in the FMPU Magic Pop file.

The actual 1977 signal lasted 72 seconds.

We still don't know what caused it.

But look what humanity did with those 72 seconds.

Books. UFO theories. SETI arguments. Documentaries. Websites. T-shirts. Fifty years of speculation.

And now a Muse album.

Astronomy gave us an anomaly.

Popular culture gave the anomaly a mythology.

Maybe someday somebody finally explains the Wow! Signal and it turns out to be completely mundane.

Fine.

The cultural signal has already traveled much farther.

The original transmission lasted 72 seconds. The echo is still going.
