NASA - STEREO Spies First Major Activity of Solar Cycle 24

NASA′s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft has spotted the first major activity of the new solar cycle. On May 5, 2009, STEREO-B observed a Type II radio burst and a bright, fast coronal mass ejection (CME) emanating from the far side of the sun. The activity originated in a solar active region that rotated into view from Earth on May 8. The following is a detailed look at the initial report from NASA.
A Type II radio burst is a discharge of radio waves that are emitted when shocks are accelerated by a CME—the sudden eruption of energy and solar material.
The active region appears well above the sun′s equator, at about 30 degrees latitude, which indicates it is part of the new solar cycle. Activity from the previous solar cycle would appear nearer to the sun′s equator. These regions also have a distinct magnetic organization characteristic of new cycle regions.
″This is a really exciting opportunity to observe the first major outbreak of solar activity in Solar Cycle 24,″ says Joseph Gurman, the newly named project scientist for STEREO at Goddard Space Flight Center. Gurman officially takes the helm from current project scientist Michael Kaiser on June 1.
The last years of Solar Cycle 23 marked the longest and deepest solar minimum in 100 years. Its unusually small number of active regions and sunspots have led some impatient space-weather watchers to wonder if we were entering another ″Maunder minimum.″ That period, in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, saw few, if any, sunspot regions, and coincided with the deepest part of the ″Little Ice Age″ of global cooling.
The twin STEREO spacecraft each carry two instruments and two instrument suites, including the Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI). SECCHI consists of an extreme ultraviolet imager (EUVI), two visible-light coronagraphs (COR-1 and COR-2), and a heliospheric imager (HI). The radio bursts were observed by the SWAVES instrument, also included in the STEREO payload. The solar activity on May 5 was detected with the EUVI instrument aboard STEREO-B, the spacecraft that trails behind Earth in its orbit around the sun.
STEREO, the third mission in NASA′s Solar Terrestrial Probes series, launched on October 26, 2006. STEREO′s mission, now in the extended phase, is to provide the first-ever stereoscopic measurements to study the sun.

Regarding the correspondence previously sent to the new President calling for Disclosure.
a) What is the President's response to these thousands of requests for formal acknowledgement of an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race?
b) Can the press please see copies of this correspondence to Barack Obama calling for Disclosure of an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race?
Regarding the connection between the UFO/ET issue and key members of the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party.
c) Will the Administration respond to the repeated call from former Clinton chief of staff and co-chair of Obama's transition team, John Podesta, for the release of all UFO files in government hands into the public domain?
d) Will the Administration respond to the call from former Secretary of Energy, former UN ambassador and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson for a reinvestigation of the July 1947 Roswell events and the release of all pertinent Roswell related government files into the public domain?
e) Has the President been briefed about Laurance Rockefeller's three-year effort to get President Clinton to release all UFO files in government hands into the public domain? Key members of this administration and the Democratic Party were fully aware of this effort including President Clinton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, John Podesta, CIA Director Leon Panetta, Vice President Al Gore and then Congressman Bill Richardson.
f) Has the President discussed the Rockefeller Initiative with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?
g) CIA Director Leon Panetta was Clinton's chief of staff during the Rockefeller Initiative and knew of this effort. Given the national security implications of the UFO/ET issue, why wasn't Mr. Panetta queried about it in his confirmation hearing? Rockefeller Initiative
h) Has the President or any high level member of the current Administration ever discussed the Rockefeller Initiative with former President Bill Clinton?
i) Is the Administration aware that President Bill Clinton and then First Lady Hillary Clinton met with Laurance Rockefeller in 1995 at his ranch in Wyoming and discussed the UFO/ET issue and Rockefeller's desire that Clinton be the "Disclosure President?" Other questions.
j) Tens of thousands of UFO related flies have recently been released into the public domain by France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Brazil and other countries. Why hasn't the United States done the same?
k) What is the Administration's response to Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell's call for the Administration to release all UFO documents in government files and to acknowledge the extraterrestrial presence?
l) Has President Obama asked for or been given a complete briefing from his military and intelligence chiefs on what the United States government knows about the UFO/ET issue and what evidence is in the government's hands relating to this issue?
m) Does the United States government have in its possession crashed vehicles of extraterrestrial origin? If so, has progress been made in understanding the nature of this technology? And why hasn't this technology been made available for peaceful use at a time of multiple global crises?
n) Mr. President, President Clinton, Secretary of State Clinton, Governor Bill Richardson, Mr. Podesta, Director Panetta, polls show that 50+% of the American people believe some UFOs are extraterrestrial space craft and 85+% believe their government is not telling the truth of the matter.
