THE PHOTOCOPIER STRIKES BACK

Something funny happened to the zine. It survived. Not as nostalgia. Not as a museum object. As an actual publishing format. Microcosm Publishing has just released Joe Biel’s You Can Make a Zine: Start Your Own Underground Publishing Revolution , and the timing is almost too perfect. We now live inside a media environment full of feeds, recommendation systems, synthetic images, automated writing, engagement traps and people yelling at one another through software. The zine’s response is basically: Here’s some paper. That’s the whole revolution. Make something. Print it. Staple it. Hand it to somebody. No algorithm decides who sees it. No platform quietly changes the rules. No advertiser needs to approve the subject. Nobody asks you to “optimize” the headline because six strangers stopped scrolling after 1.7 seconds.
