Midnight Special - PREDICTION CULTURE

PREDICTION CULTURE — People are now betting on whether disputed history is true. WIRED's report on Verifact Markets describes a new beta project called Verifact Markets that turns contested historical propositions into tradeable markets. Instead of “Who wins the election?”, users can trade propositions involving questions such as the origins of COVID-19 or the circumstances of Jeffrey Epstein's death. Participants can also submit evidence. WIRED +1 Here's the crucial guardrail: market consensus does not determine historical truth. Verifact says its eventual resolutions will incorporate evidence through a proprietary research process rather than simply declaring whichever side attracts the most money correct. But that resolution methodology is presently opaque, and the project has no demonstrated accuracy record. WIRED +1 FMPU angle: THE STOCK MARKET FOR CONSPIRACY THEORIES.
