From the NASA website this is a strange one. It could be a reflection, I suppose, but the internetters are thinking it could be some strange Mars base. Hmmmm...

Hi Joe-
I believe that's the bottom of a protective cover over the camera, so what we're looking at -- from bottom to top -- is 1.) the shadow of the rover, 2.) the ground, 3.) a narrow horizontal stretch of sky, and finally 4.) the underside of some kind of protective hood or cover.
I can't remember if I figured that out or if I had read it last year somewhere. Anyhoo, there ya go.
Cheers,
-Deirdre
Oh so cool of you to chime in. Deidre, if you don't know is a writer for UFO Magazine. .
Thanks for your take here, I couldn't be bothered much by what the ufonaughts have been spreading around but your explanation is plausible. But why is that the 1st time we've seen that, similar images must have been shot with similar lighting, with similar backdrop, but in all these years it happened this time? Feed my inner ufonaught! FEED ME!!!
Good question -- and I had thought of that too. So, here I go:
Martian terrain is very rocky, so it could have been jarred loose and fallen a bit making thus obscuring the lens.
Or...
Maybe the camera moves independent of the cover and because of the angle of the shot, was aimed more upwards.
*shrugging as I grasp at straws*
