FMPU attended a Super Bowl party last weekend and left very disheartened.
The party was, by all standards, damn good. Attended by a young horny couple busy making out most of the first half, a enraged female Giants fan who screamed at 90% of the plays, and a very flamboyant daddy (with his wife). Also in the crowd were a few of my long-time friends from high school.
As I sat there investigating commercials for paranormal activity (I wasn't all that let down!) and rooting for Gronkowski to nab the game's MVP award (a HUGE letdown, but I took the bet at 15-1 odds), the one thing that kept striking at my senses was just how unusual those old-time friends are. After this many years you'd think there'd be a little more love, but all I got was weird vibes. Oh we laughed a bit, and caught up briefly, but man, I just couldn't help thinking how to reconnect with them without coming off sounding like an idiot. First I told them a few things and it was back to the same old bashing, then they stared at me when I told them I got Burning Man tickets. That set me off, I guess. Here I am, sitting here with two tickets to the 2012 BM, and I can't help but think it may not be my scene after all. Then I had a sudden shart of enthusiasm, and decided it was a time to tell them to blow me as a collective unit. And they looked at me like I came from space.
So much for the old times.
I only keep in touch with a few very old friends and most of those I rarely if see in person. All I can say is we have much different lives and very little (if anything) in common at this point. They seem mostly interested in talking about their children and family. Since I have no children and never wanted any - I find that topic boring. I am sure that I seem very weird and probably boring to them, no children, writes for UFO Mag and so on. It isn't that they are in any way bad people, we just don't have any common interests.
ReplyDeleteAnd BTW - Congrats on scoring Burning Man tickets!

ReplyDeleteI had no idea that men were into the family talk too. I would think they feel obligated to talk about that, but honestly I think so much of their lives are consumed with that - they don't know much else to talk about. I am not going to go so far as to say that is sad, but I am happy that I decided to never have children. :-)
