“Journal of a UFO Investigator” by David Halperin (Viking, $25.95) is a great twist on the coming-of-age stories. Set in the 60s, this is the story of a Jewish boy and his adventures in the subculture of UFOs and hi-jinx ensue.
There's an in-depth review at the Jewish Journal that goes in to far more detail. Here's a quote:
The story that Halperin tells opens on the day in 1966 when 13-year-old Danny Shapiro reports a sighting to his friends and fellow adolescent “UFO investigators.” The search for a plausible explanation draws young Danny into a mysterious text, an even more mysterious death, and then into what appears to be a deadly pursuit across time and space. “Riddles chased mysteries, were chased by enigmas, around and around my brain,” is how young Danny explains it all to himself.
''Journal of a UFO Investigator is a remarkable book. Part science fiction, part novel of growing up, part surrealist voyage into the imagination, it is a disconcerting and satisfying experience.'' --Iain Pears, New York Times bestselling author
I'm a sucker for a good coming of age story, and I'm going to pick up a copy off Amazon.
